The aufeis field near Galbraith Lake, just before we got to the Toolik Field Station, is one of my favorite stops. Speaking as a non-scientist, the colors and shapes of the ice, as well as the surrounding hills and the view of the Brooks Range at the top of the aufeis, are what attracts my attention. I would love to spend more time here and watch the process of breaking up the huge chunks of ice and the erosion by the small streams, as well as see the hills turn from snow covered to green and flowered.
